Providing support for people affected by community violence: individuals, families, professionals and systems
We believe there are three critical issues that currently impact people who experience community violence
Clinical psychology remains largely inaccessible to many who could benefit from its services. Marginalised communities in particular face significant barriers, including limited availability of providers in underserved areas and long waiting lists that delay care. These systemic challenges contribute to a persistent gap in access, leaving those with the greatest need often unable to receive timely and appropriate support.
In our combined experiences, these services often operate within rigid criteria that sometimes exclude people who need them most. These services may then struggle to fully address the complex challenges common in communities and systems exposed to community violence.
Traditional mental health services are sometimes staffed with professionals who do not have the lived experience to fully understand the nuances of community violence. This cultural disconnect may heighten feelings of mistrust and alienation, potentially impacting help-seeking..
We maintain professional registration with the UK’s leading regulatory and professional bodies for psychological services. This ensures our practice meets rigorous standards for training, competence, and ethical conduct in mental health care.
